“I don’t think I could read a Virginia Woolf book. I think there’re probably too difficult and full of obscure references I won’t understand”. I’ve heard these worries so many times. I want to persuade you that you do t need to worry - her writing isn’t difficult, isn’t obscure, but does contain great riches and wonders.
This three-week online course is designed to introduce you to the writing of Virginia Woolf, by using five short stories to start your journey into one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Or, indeed, of all time.
We’ll send out an initial short video introducing Virginia Woolf and her writing when you register for the course. We’ll also ask you then when are some good times for a weekly group zoom conversation.
Each week we’ll send out a short video introducing both Virginia Woolf in her life and times, and also that week’s short stories. Then we’ll get together on zoom to discuss those stories and any other issues they’ve raised.

Week 1
“The Mark on the Wall” and “Kew Gardens” - These two were among the very earliest of Virginia Woolf’s short fiction.

Week 2
“A Haunted House” and “An Unwritten Novel” - These two explore the possibilities of fiction in some surprising ways

Week 3
"Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street” - This story was in many ways a ‘dry run’ for perhaps Virginia Woolf’s most famous novel: “Mrs Dalloway” and makes a fascinating introduction to that novel.
I’ve found that as well as reading a text in the usual ways, it can also be helpful to listen to it while reading. Indeed, there’s now a lot of research indicating that this combination is really good for our comprehension. There are recordings of all of these stories readily available.
