Ulysses

Starting 2026

As “stately plump Buck Mulligan” ascends the steps of the Martello Tower on a June morning in 1904 we are invited into a novel that stretches wide, reaches deep, and appeals for our attention and our concentration.

Yes, at times it is a complex read. I will try to walk us through those passages.

At other times it is offers us a simplicity that is beguiling. It is, as Declan Kiberd claimed, “The book about everything”.

We will work our way slowly through the book, reading section by section and pausing occasionally to review how far we have come and where we will go next.

We will start in the week starting January 12th, and we’ll reach the final “yes” the week before June 16. And then we will celebrate Bloomsday!

If I was forced, and I would have to be forced, to choose the “best novel of the twentieth century” it would have to be “Ulysses”. It is a book to which I have returned repeatedly for the last fifty years, and each return has been accompanied by deeper appreciation, slowly growing understanding, and at the end I want to begin again at the opening sentence. I hope you'll feel the same!
